Happy
New Year!
I hope you all had a blessed holiday season and are ready to move into
2026 with fresh hope! Remember that hope looks at all sides of a
situation, the good and the bad. Hope
implies confidence or assurance that what one desires will come to pass.
It’s an expectation of fulfillment or success. It is with hope that we can make the changes needed in our
lives.
What are some of your
New Year’s Day traditions? When I was growing up, we always had
black-eyed peas with collard greens, with a side of cornbread. Sometimes,
Mom would throw in sauerkraut to make it even more annoying, I’m sure.
But why? Mom always said it would bring good luck and
prosperity for the year. It’s a Southern tradition from my Southern
roots. Each item represents money—black-eyed peas-coins, greens-paper
money, cornbread-gold. Okay, I’m not much into the good luck thing, and
I’m glad our family eventually moved away from that tradition! Not my fav
meal, at all.
Many of you know that
New Year’s Eve Day thirty-seven years ago marked a turning point in my
life. That was a day that started with the fire department and my mother
standing together at my front door at 7 am, bringing me the news that my
fiancé, a city firefighter, had perished fighting a house fire. That day
was about death and life. Life, you ask. That was the day I returned to
God after a thirteen-year run of crazy stuff. The pain I felt was
stifling; I couldn’t catch my breath. I knew that God was the answer if I
was going to make it.
Since then, I’ve
resolved to be a better person every day. It’s not a New Year’s
resolution; it’s a daily walk with God, and He helps me be a better
person. God helped me with a LOT of issues to get me back on track.
A nicer world starts
with each person looking to do better. We can’t rely on someone else or
an institution to fix it. Each of us has been made the CEO of our own
lives. We are responsible for how we react, how we treat others, and how
we live our lives. We are to set the best example we can for others.
I hope everyone
includes the following in their 2026 resolution; not only set goals for
wealth, success, to be top dog, to be the most at anything, but to be
kinder, to be gentler- especially with those who annoy you, to offer
forgiveness; even when you don’t want to, to be generous with time and
money, to use kind words, and treat everyone with dignity and respect,
always.
I’ll be seventy
this year! Woohoo! I’ve learned a lot in this life, like, I don’t have
time to waste on pettiness. I don’t need to be right all the time. My
opinion doesn’t need to be inserted into every conversation. I don’t have
to tell everything I know. And what others think of me is none of my
business. Forgiveness is a gift for others and oneself. God is always
good, and I also know that chocolate is a major food group! ♥
Here’s to 2026!
May you find courage in the challenges that will come, laughter in the
little things and your own foibles, belly laugh at least twice a week,
hold gratitude for every day, find peace and love in every corner, walk a
bright path blessed with joy, and dream dreams you haven’t yet imagined! Debra Lee | Biz & Life
