What does "thou shalt not kill" mean in the Ten Commandments?

The commandment "thou shalt not kill" (found in the KJV Bible translation of Exodus 20:13), also listed as "thou shall not kill" is better understood in the New King James Version Bible.

You shall not murder (Exodus 20:13, NKJV throughout).

Most modern translations of the Bible render Exodus 20:13 like the New King James Bible.

To kill someone is not the same as murdering them according to the Bible. Murder is the unlawful taking of a human life. The command not to murder applies to human beings and not to animals. God gave animals to mankind for his use (Genesis 1:26 - 30, 9:1 - 4). This does not mean, however, that humans have the right to mistreat animals and the environment (Genesis 2:15, Deuteronomy 22:6 - 7, 25:4, Proverbs 12:10).

Ancient Israelites, under the Old Covenant, were allowed to kill other humans under very special circumstances such as punishment for certain sins, for example, murder (Exodus 21:12 - 14, Leviticus 24:17, 21) and adultery (Leviticus 20:10, Deuteronomy 22:22 - 24). God also allowed the Israelites to engage in warfare and even gave them instructions about waging war (Deuteronomy 20:1 - 20). He also recognized that humans might accidentally kill each other, and he made provisions for this (Numbers 35:9 - 34, Deuteronomy 19:1 - 13).

God hates murder.

The primary reason God hates murder is that out of all creation, only humans are made in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:26 - 27, 9:4 - 6). (Genesis 4:8 - 12,4:23 - 24, 9:4 - 6, Exodus 1:16 - 17).

While on earth, Jesus spoke out against murder (Matthew 5:21 - 26, Mark 10:17 - 19). We also see in the writings of Paul (Romans 1:18, 29 - 32, 13:8 - 10, Galatians5:19 - 21), James (James 2:8 - 11, 4:1 - 3), Peter (1 Peter 4:15 - 16) and John (Revelation 9:20 - 21, 21:7 - 8, 22:14 - 15) that murder is wrong.

In Matthew 5:21 - 26, Jesus amplified the meaning of the sixth commandment "thou shall not kill." He revealed that to commit murder is more than killing someone, it means having an angry and unforgiving attitude towards them (Matthew 5:21 - 26).

The apostle John elaborates on this by writing that to hate someone is the same as murdering them. He states, "Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him" (1 John 3:15, NKJV).

Where does it take root?

Murder, like all sin, has its beginnings in the human mind (Matthew 15:18 - 19, Mark 7:20 - 23). It starts as a thought, in this case hatred, which leads to the action of murder (James 1:13 - 15, 4:1 - 3). God wants us to replace hate with loving even our enemies (Matthew 5:43 - 48). Instead of pursuing revenge, we sought to seek ways to help them (Romans 12:17 - 21).

Another change took place under the New Covenant that altered the meaning of 'thou shalt not kill.' Christians, unlike ancient Israel, are not allowed to execute sinners. They are not to indulge in carnal warfare but rather fight spiritual battles (John 18:36, 2 Corinthians 10:1 - 6, Ephesians 6:10 - 18, 1Timothy 1:18- 20, 6:11 - 14, 2 Timothy 2:3 - 5, 4:6 - 8).

Christians must be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9, Romans 14:19), forgiving those who harm (Ephesians 4:29 - 32, Colossians 3:12 - 14, Matthew 6:9 - 15, Mark 11:25 -26), treating their enemies with love (Luke 6:27 - 36) and not seeking revenge (Romans 12:17 - 21, 1Peter 3:8 - 12).

Hatred, which is the same as murder (1 John 3:15), is unforgiving, vengeful, and hostile toward one's enemies. The more we walk with God and do his will, the more we will fulfill "Thou Shall not Kill."

Faith in the Midst of Change: Navigating Dementia Care with Grace

Faith in the Midst of Change: Navigating Dementia Care with Grace

By Rayna Neises, ACC

Watching someone you love live with brain changes like Alzheimer’s Disease is heartbreaking. I can't say caregiving for dementia is harder than other types because I've lost both of my parents to this disease, and therefore it is my only reference. Brain change is not only a medical condition, but also a life-changing experience that impacts both the individual and their caregivers. I'm grateful that my deep faith has been grounding and empowering during my caregiving seasons.

The Role of Faith in Understanding and Acceptance

Understanding Beyond Science: Faith is important in caregiving for people with brain changes or dementia. It offers understanding that goes beyond medical knowledge, bringing comfort and strength in uncertain situations. It offers a unique form of understanding that goes beyond what medical knowledge can provide, serving as a source of comfort and strength in the face of uncertainty and the unknown.

When we lean on faith, we're reminded that there's a greater plan and purpose beyond our immediate challenges and struggles. Faith helps us to see beyond the physical and cognitive declines associated with conditions like dementia, allowing us to connect with the person on a spiritual level. This spiritual connection reinforces the idea that the essence of the individual—their soul—is intact, regardless of the changes happening in their brain.

Moreover, faith instills a sense of hope and resilience. It encourages caregivers to trust God, providing a sense of peace and acceptance even in difficult circumstances. This peace, as described in Philippians 4:7, "which surpasses all understanding," doesn't negate the reality of the situation or the challenges faced. Instead, it offers a form of solace that helps caregivers navigate their journey with grace, knowing they're not alone.

In essence, faith acts as a beacon of light in the often unpredictable and dark journey of dementia care. It offers a perspective that elevates the caregiving experience from one of mere duty to one of ministry and service, grounded in love and compassion. This deeper understanding, rooted in faith, empowers caregivers to face each day with renewed strength and purpose, making the journey a testament to the enduring power of love and faith amidst adversity.

The Power of Prayer in Caregiving

A Two-Way Conversation: Prayer was a cornerstone of my caregiving experiences. Petitioning God for what we need is important, but it is not just asking for help or healing it is a conversation.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - Encourages continual prayer as a means to rejoice always and give thanks in all circumstances, recognizing this as God's will. There can be extraordinary joy even while you are experiencing heartbreak.  Prayer encapsulates the expressions of all of ourselves - heart, mind, soul and spirit. But remember to take time to listen.  Sitting quietly during and after our prayers allows space to hear the still small voice of the Lord.  Don’t rush off; He will give you peace and wisdom when lingering with Him listening for Him.

Hope and Eternal Perspective

Beyond the Here and Now:  Faith offers a beacon of hope in the often-difficult journey of dementia care. It reassures us that our struggles are not in vain and that there is a purpose and a plan beyond our current understanding. This hope is not just for the present moment but extends into eternity, offering a profound sense of peace and comfort amidst the challenges.

While caregiving, faith provides the strength to continue loving and serving, even when the journey becomes particularly difficult. It reminds us that our labor of love is seen and valued, not just by those we care for but also by God. This recognition can be incredibly affirming and sustaining.

For those experiencing brain change, faith can be a source of comfort too. Even if their cognitive abilities decline, the spiritual essence of a person remains. Engaging in spiritual practices, listening to familiar hymns, or simply being in a faith-filled environment can bring moments of peace and joy. Some of my favorite memories are of taking my dad to church and listening again to his strong voice as he sang praises to God.

Ultimately, faith offers a perspective that looks beyond the temporal to the eternal. It reminds me that while dementia may impact memory and cognition, it cannot touch the soul. 2 Corinthians 4:18 encourages us to "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." This eternal perspective can bring immense comfort to both caregivers and those in their care, providing a sense of hope and peace that transcends the challenges of the present.

Embracing the beacon of light and hope which faith provides can be one of the most important companions during your caregiving season. Leaning into faith, seeking support from your faith community, and holding onto hope as you care for loved ones experiencing brain change or dementia can sustain you even in this hardest of seasons.

Women are Strong and Precious!

“The house does not rest upon the ground, but upon a woman.”

- Mexican Proverb

If I can say anything to women today to help with their confidence, it is that they are STRONG & PRECIOUS! Don’t let any outside influences tell you differently.

“She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” - Proverbs 3:15

“Strength and dignity are her clothing…” – Proverbs 31:25

We all realize that women are the ones who hold all the relationships together and take care of the entire family in their households. Women save the whole house and are responsible for taking care of every member. They make sure that everyone is feeling good, safe, and happy. They have access to the heart of each family member, and they never let anyone feel left out.

A mother always knows where her children are, where her husband is, and everything that they are involved in.

Those women without children build community within the village and help other women out, teaching, training, mentoring, and helping raise their neighbors’ children. They become auntie or grammy to many.

Women are angels. They manage a lot, yet do not complain. They turn houses into homes. They are wise. They are significant. They are unique in gifts and character.  They are the glue that binds.

They are Strong & Precious.

The Best Places for QR Code Use

One thing to remember, most people do not know how to scan a QR code that is in a social media post if they are viewing it with their phone. One of the most common complaints I’ve heard over the years is “Why do people put QR codes in a social post. Don’t they know I can’t scan it with my phone if it is on my phone?”

The following are some great ways to use a QR code:

1.      Business cards: Include QR codes on your business cards.

2.   Point of sale: Display QR codes at the checkout counter to direct customers to review sites or social media.

3.     Storefront: Place QR codes on your storefront for easy access.

4.     In-store/office displays: Use QR codes in displays within your store or office.

5.     Direct mail: Include QR codes in your mailings.

6.    Feedback Forms: If you're using free samples to test a new product with your audience, QR codes can work here too. For instance, you could use this tool to direct shoppers to a feedback form. This will give them instant access to review your product, providing you with valuable data.

7.   Post QR codes wherever your audience is in for a long wait. This could include bus stops or busy drive-throughs. If you want to increase the impact, you can provide a few QR codes leading to interactive content, such as quizzes, games, or engaging videos. This can give people a sense of discovery, as well as control over their time.

8.    Handouts/Flyers: Flyers or info cards are a great place to add a QR code.

9.    Packaging: Give consumers a QR code to scan for direct access to your site.

10. Shopping Bags: QR codes on shopping bags can incentivize people to connect with your brand even after they have left the place of business

11. Receipts: QR codes can link to special offers/discounts to encourage people to do business with you again.

12. Wayfinding/Informational signage: QR codes can be great on wayfinding, informational or educational signage in places like public parks, trails, museums, zoos, and more.

13. TV Commercials

Have you ever used Linked Tree? It’s a platform where you can have all your links to socials and web listed in one place, allowing you to only post one link. Well believe it or not, there are QR Code generators that do the same thing! Create only one QR code that will help your followers find all your platforms with one scan.

Not everyone knows about Google Lens. Download and install the app for Android, or it might already be installed. iPhone users should download the official Google app from the App Store. In both cases, make sure the QR Code Scanning feature is active on the device.

Open the Google Lens app. To capture an external QR code, position the rear camera around the code. The link is now visible, and Google Lens will prompt you to Tap Shutter Button to Open Website.

Happy Scanning!

How to use hashtags!

How to Use Hashtags and 100 best Hashtags to use!

Using hashtags to help you promote your posts and draw attention to your business is a no-brainer for most marketers. However, many may not know that there are various best practices for different hashtag-friendly platforms.

  • On Instagram get more impressions with a healthy mix of hashtags. The best way to achieve a hashtag optimized and tidy post is to use the “5 dot method”. This is where there you put 5 full stops, each on a different line after your caption, before your hashtags. This forces Instagram to ‘collapse’ your post, so your hashtags are not immediately visible, but you still gain the post engagement from them!

  • On Twitter, one or two hashtags should be your tweet’s max. Knowing the importance of hashtags and how to use them still doesn’t save you from the burden of researching the best hashtags to use when promoting your posts.

  • Studies have shown that the more hashtags you use on a Facebook post, the less engagement it will receive. We would recommend not using any more than 2 hashtags on a Facebook post. Because it is better to use limited numbers of hashtags on your post, it is important to use hashtags that are extremely relevant to the content of the post. Using brand-specific hashtags can also be beneficial, since users will quickly recognize that the content is about your business, it may become ‘normal language’ and be used by others, as well as users being able to easily see all your content if they search for your hashtag. Just remember that your brand-specific hashtag may not catch on for several years.

  • Using hashtags on LinkedIn is extremely beneficial in increasing post visibility, assisting with engagement and building your network. For LinkedIn it is recommended that you use exactly 3 hashtags on a post.

Make sure you carefully check if a hashtag is available before using it (just search for it on every platform) and test it to see if it is read in the right way by everyone (no embarrassing interpretations!).

Hashtags work to help you reach your target audience.  By using hashtags, that are relevant to the content of your post, the more people will see your content.

You can use pretty much any word or phrase for a hashtag, but the main types include:

  • descriptive hashtags (product, service, task, what people call themselves…)

  • location hashtags

  • brand hashtags (#helpingbusinessbloom), campaign hashtags

  • event hashtags

  • community/interest hashtags

Hashtags were invented to help bring order to the social media user experience. Hashtags group together similar conversations to help people find content that matters to them. Once a hashtag is published, it becomes a clickable, searchable link.

Take advantage of trending hashtags to attract more attention to your posts.

Using popular hashtags is also a great way to come up with creative ideas for new content. Plus, it helps your brand become part of a larger community and join the conversation.

Just because a hashtag is popular doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for your brand. For example, there are hashtag holidays almost every day (days like #NationalHotdogDay or #SiblingsDay).

Before using a new hashtag, determine your goal (example: increased engagement).

After you have an endgame in mind, start digging into hashtag research.

Knowing the importance of hashtags and how to use them still doesn’t save you from the burden of researching the best hashtags to use when promoting your posts.
