I don’t know about you, but if we don’t cry for what makes Jesus cry, what kind of Christians are we? The injustices happening around the world should make us cry and anger us; the kind of ‘Jesus’ ire’ when he turned over the temple tables.
The book of Amos was written to the northern tribes of Israel as a warning; a warning of destruction if they refused to change. You see, they thought that they were doing all the right things. But they had neglected the true heart of loving and worshiping God.
God wanted to address what they weren’t doing. They were failing to take care of the poor and needy. They turned their eyes against injustices. Many had turned to idols for help and prayer.
God reminded them that it was just as important to be righteous inwardly as well as outwardly. We cannot say that we love God and others when we fail to help people who are within our power to help. We need to stand up for those who are suffering and who are unable to help themselves.
James 1:27 tells us, religion includes helping orphans, widows, and those who are in distress. James goes on to write that faith without works is dead faith. (James 2:26)
Take some time to think about your own life. How much time do you prioritize your own spirituality versus serving others? How can you serve your church, your neighborhood, and your school to help those in need?
All of these are ways that our faith becomes COMPLETE in Christ as we follow Him.
We shouldn’t worry about or weigh against whether someone is worthy to be helped or not. I hear this all the time. It’s none of your concern if God has called you; put it on your heart to help someone, do it. He will handle the rest.
Things are only going to get worse. How do I know? The book of Revelation describes what’s going to happen. More people will be homeless and hungry. There will be more refugees. There will be more sick people. So, let’s reorder our priorities and complete our faith in Christ by serving others in the ways that we can.
In blessing others, you will be blessed.
