Q&A with just Debra

Question: Is it wrong to consult a medium or have your palm read? ~ anonymous

This question is in regard to Christian participation.

I always say, don’t go where the angels don’t go, but let’s take a look at some definitions and warnings that comes with consulting divination sources for life’s answers. Sometimes, a person doesn’t know what they don’t know and can fall into things, so let’s get some answers!

Paul predicted: "But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons. " (I Timothy 4: 1)

Do you work with Mediums, Palmist, or live by the daily Horoscopes found online or in print?

Back in the day I remember my grandmother would read the daily horoscope and put some stock into it.

It was the all the rage in the 60’s & 70’s! Whenever you met a new person, they would ask you what your Zodiac Sign was. I think all of us old enough to remember participated in this fad.

I know I did. I found out what my sign was, read about it so that I knew all my personal qualities and feelings. A lot of the times, I would read my horoscope to see if it came anywhere close to describing me. Of course, sometimes they were right, sometimes they were wrong. Sometimes it was a mixed bag.

People would pick their friends and associates based upon their “sign”. People would pick their marriage partners based upon their “sign”. After all, there are some folks that just shouldn’t be matched up according to their Zodiac signs.  Hmm.

Let’s look at some definitions for divination that prophesy and predict a person’s future.

What is a horoscope?

A horoscope is an astrological chart or diagram representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, astrological aspects, and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth. It is claimed by proponents of astrology that a horoscope can be used as a method of divination regarding events relating to the point in time it represents.

Professional astrologers usually write horoscopes. These people have studied astrology in-depth to develop a deep knowledge of the Zodiac, the stars, astrological events, and the lunar calendar. To become a professional, you don't need to follow one set path.

What are palm readers?

Palmistry is the practice of fortune-telling through the study of the palm. Also known as palm reading, chiromancy, chirology, the practice is found all over the world, with numerous cultural variations. Those who practice palmistry are generally called palmists, hand readers, hand analysts, or chirologists. Palmists say it helps them learn about the character of a person and tell their future.

What’s a tarot card reading?

Tarot card reading is a form of cartomancy whereby practitioners use tarot cards to purportedly gain insight into the past, present, or future. They formulate a question, then draw cards to interpret them for this end. Tarot is also used widely as a device for seeking personal guidance and spiritual growth. Practitioners often believe tarot cards can help the individual explore one's spiritual path.

What’s a mind reader?

Synonyms for a mind reader are mentalist, spiritualist, channelers, spiritists, sensitives, clairvoyants, telepaths, and mediums.

Humans cannot literally read another human’s mind. Mind readers pick up on cues, such as body language, words, and emotions. It’s a skill of mindfulness in reading another person.

What’s a psychic?

A psychic is a person who claims to use extrasensory perception (ESP) to identify information hidden from the normal senses, particularly involving telepathy or clairvoyance, or who performs acts that are apparently inexplicable by natural laws, such as psychokinesis or teleportation. Although many people believe in psychic abilities, the scientific consensus is that there is no proof of the existence of such powers and describes the practice as pseudoscience. The word "psychic" is also used as an adjective to describe such abilities.

What’s a Ouija board?

The Ouija, also known as a spirit board or talking board, is a flat board marked with the letters of the Latin alphabet, the numbers 0–9, the words "yes", "no", occasionally "hello" and "goodbye", along with various symbols and graphics. It uses a planchette as a movable indicator to spell out messages during a séance. Participants place their fingers on the planchette, and it is moved about the board to spell out words.

Spiritualists in the United States believed that the dead were able to contact the living and reportedly used a talking board very similar to a modern Ouija board.

What is Crystal Gazing?

Crystal gazing may be a very simple or a very elaborate performance, but in every case the crystal ball is to induce in the clairvoyant a form of hypnosis, so that he may see visions in the crystal.

Are Christians to use crystals for their powers?

The way crystals are being used is tied back to the New Age Movement. The New Age Movement has its roots in Eastern mysticism, and they use spirituality hoping to open a person's "third eye", which provides an understanding of the world that transcends the rational mind. None of these beliefs line up with beliefs in the Bible.

The use of sacred stones for mystical purposes was common among the pagan peoples of the Bible Lands. God uttered a stern warning to the false prophetesses of Israel in Ezekiel 13:18, 20 & 21.

Furthermore, when believing that crystals hold power it takes away from believing in God’s power. Using crystals for protection or healing is an idolatrous practice. It is idolatry because it depends on spiritual forces other than God for healing and protection. Idolatry is repeatedly and strongly forbidden in the Bible (Deuteronomy 4:15–20; Jeremiah 44:1–4; 1 Corinthians 10:14–20; 2 Corinthians 6:16–17).

All this is fun and giggles, until it isn’t.

I have found that many of those who proclaim Christianity integrate some of the above activities in their own lives. I always say that you don’t’ know, what you don’t know. And this is one of those dealios. They don’t know what can happen to them by practicing divination.

Some Christians have taken on a “cafeteria style” religion; picking and choosing. A little bit of this and a little bit of that not recognizing how dangerous this can be for their faith walk.

A major issue today is religious pluralism. We are tempted to follow along with our culture and think that Jesus is just one of several valid ways to God.

Culture says that it is okay to seek out mediums to help us with our spiritual health, wellbeing, needs and wants. It’s okay to look down the road with a psychic and see what is coming up next.

For Christians, the Bible is our final authority for faith and practice. Scripture tells us that if we seek the Kingdom of God first, then all the things we need will be added to us. God will work through all circumstances and events, for our good, when we place him first in our lives.

The scriptures make it plain and simple to understand that we are to seek God with our questions and needs. No one else. We are to put our faith in Him that He knows best for our lives.

1 Chronicles 16:11 “Look to the Lord and his strength: seek his face always.”

What does the Bible say about us knowing our future? What does the Bible say about seeking Mediums and others of the like for answers?

For some reason, there’s a couple of things that people mainly want to know when seeking a divinator and that is how and when they are going to die and their love life and who are they going to marry. Actually, we are not to know any of this stuff unless God reveals it to us.

The Bible makes it clear that our lives are in God’s hands. He knows the time of our death, and He has even appointed it. The Bible says, “Man’s days are determined; you (God) have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed” (Job 14:5).

The Bible makes it clear and with a warning that we are not to use divinators.

Leviticus 20:6 “As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritists, to play the harlot after them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.”

Isaiah 8:19 When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?”

Deuteronomy 18:10-11 "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.

Romans 1:25 “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise!”

The Bible is full of verses on this subject with its warnings.

Why do people seek out spiritists for answers instead of God?

♦Sometimes it’s because they did seek God and he answered them, but with the answer they didn’t like.

♦Sometimes, people get tired of waiting for God’s answer and seek answers elsewhere to speed things up.

·   ♦Sometimes, they are not rooted in the Bible and don’t see the problem.

·   ♦And others are like, why not, it won’t hurt anything to have a little fun with it!

I always say, don’t go where the angels don’t go!

There are some dangers to going there! Each time you do, you get sucked into the glamour of it, and make excuses for doing it.

·         ♦It does not line up with the Word and you risk your relationship with God.

·         ♦You risk losing yourself.

·         ♦You risk becoming depressed when things don’t come to fruition as told.

·         ♦It breaks a commandment. Exodus 20:2

·         ♦Can lead to insecurity and fear.

·         ♦You are deceived and taken advantage of, including monetarily.

·         ♦Leads to false/misleading info that can affect decision making/actions.

·         ♦Can cause harm to mental, physical, or spiritual wellbeing.

·         ♦Causes one not to rely on one’s own intuition, reason, or faith.

When a Christian is living in a constant state of faith and not fear and worry, there is no need to know what the future holds, no need to consult the dead, or read the horoscope to see what your day is going to be like.

Christians have their hope and future already in place. And it’s really something to look forward to!

Oh, and my grandmother who read her horoscope every day; she allowed her grandchildren to convince her that this was not a good thing for an upstanding Christian woman to be doing. Proven to her with scripture. ☺

Keep your faith protected and well!

“It Is What It Is” & “Making Wise Choices”

The Animal School & Exploring Spiritual Gifts

What are Spiritual Gifts? How do we get them? How should we use them? Why should we use them, and what are some precautions about Spiritual Gifts.

Spiritual Gifts are given to the saved from the Holy Spirit for building up the body of Christ. They are not given for personal gain, but for ministry in the world. They are different from natural talents which all people have. Sometimes a person’s natural talents and their spiritual gifts align, but not always.

Romans 12:4-6 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith.

1 Corinthians 12:24-27 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

We each have our part or role to play in the body of Christ, and no one’s gift is more important or placed above another, all are equal!

I found the following story from another source which explains this well:

The Animal School

Once upon a time, right after creation, all the animals formed a school. They established a well-rounded curriculum of swimming, running, climbing, and flying. All the animals were required to take all the courses.

The duck excelled at swimming. In fact, he was better than the instructor! But he only made passing grades in climbing and was very poor in running. He was so slow, he had to stay after school to practice running. This caused his webbed feet to become so badly worn that he became only average in swimming. But average was quite acceptable, so no one ever worried about it, except the duck.

The rabbit was top of her class at running. But after a while, she developed a twitch in her leg from all the time she spent in the water trying to improve her swimming.

The squirrel was a peak performer at climbing but was constantly frustrated in flying class. His body became so worn from all the hard landings he did not do too well at climbing and ended up being very poor at running.

The eagle was a continual problem student. She was severely disciplined for being a nonconformist. In climbing class, she would always beat everyone else to the top of the tree. She insisted upon using her own way of getting there.

Each animal has its unique design. When they did what they were designed to do, they excelled. When they tried to operate outside of their area of expertise, they were not nearly as effective.

Can ducks run? Sure, they can! Is that what they do best? No! Given the limited time that each of us has, doesn’t it make sense to serve where we are best equipped?

Ducks can run and run hard. But they are slow and get tired quickly. People in ministry can be like that. Like a duck out of water, we can serve outside our area of giftedness. We can do it, but it is not what we do best. That is why knowing our spiritual gifts and abilities is important. It enables us to do our best with enthusiasm and effectiveness.

Ephesians 2:10 10For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

In 2 Timothy 1:6 Paul encourages Timothy “to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you.” In other words, know your gifts and abilities and then use them. Using our gifts is part of God’s plan for us. Our gifts are resources and to use them effectively is good stewardship.

Sometimes we are reluctant to know our gifts and abilities, just like Moses. In Exodus 3 & 4 we find Moses trying every excuse he can to avoid doing what he knew God, present before him in the burning bush, was calling him to do. Moses was pulling back from using the gifts God had given him not realizing that God had already given him all he needed. What God really wanted from Moses was obedience. None of us have had God speak to us through burning foliage! But in reading the story of Moses’ encounter with God, we can learn many lessons.

God did not create junk! He chose us with a pre-determined purpose! He gave us spiritual gifts and abilities to accomplish His purpose.

We are all called to live a Holy Life and to Serve. We will do it best if we use the gifts that He has given to us.

We must answer Gods call to serve. If we do not answer His call, and say, “I’ll do it my way and my way only”, well, it's like saying that you do not respect the One who has saved you.

Choosing to answer His call, or not, will ultimately affect our rewards in Heaven.

To say, “As long as I get there”! (Regarding heaven), is the devil’s deception. (It’s an “I’ve got my fire insurance” only attitude)

Romans 12:6 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us….

Not sure of your giftedness? There are many online resources to take a spiritual giftedness test to find out what areas you score the highest in. When discerning your spiritual gifts, take time to pray for the revelations.

After I took the test, I picked the top three that I scored in and worked with those. Mine have changed over the years! So, go back and take it a few times over a period of years.

Administration and Discernment always ranked high for me and sometimes they would flip flop. The last time I took a Spiritual Gift test, Evangelism popped up for the first time ever! I was shocked. Apparently, no one else in the room was shocked at my new revelation. Sometimes, others see in you what you don’t!

Cautions regarding Spiritual Gifts:

1.       Feelings that your gifts are not special

It is so easy to look at another’s giftedness and be a bit jealous. Sometimes one gift may seem to be exalted over others, i.e., teaching, preaching, singing, leaving some to view their gift as not as important or as spiritual as another.

“All these [gifts] are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He determines.” 1 Corinthians 12:11

“…have gifts differing according to the GRACE that is given to us.” Romans 12:6

They are all important gifts and are given to us as God determines and with GRACE!

2.       Using it for your OWN good to gain praise

From “God’s Daily Word Ministries” – Steve Troxel

Ahithophel was a highly regarded advisor to King David, “Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God” 2 Samuel 16:23. But when David’s son, Absalom, rebelled and sought to become the new king, Ahithophel joined with Absalom. Ahithophel had reason to be angry with David; he was the grandfather of Bathsheba and had watched as David violated his granddaughter and then had her husband killed (2 Samuel 11).

In his anger Ahithophel advised Absalom how to defeat David, but God had other plans’ “The Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom” (2Smuel 17:14). When Absalom refused to follow his advice, Ahithophel took the rejection very personally.

2 Samuel 17-23 “When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself.”

Ahithophel had once been close to God and was used for many years to give Godly direction, but at some point, in his ministry Ahithophel began to take ownership. He determined his self-worth based on the results of his ministry and began to use his gifts for his own selfish purpose. When his message was no longer trusted, and his ministry was not going in the direction he desired, his self-worth fell, and he found he had no reason to continue.

God has called each of us to be His messengers and has given us a ministry of sharing the gospel: “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us” (2 Corinthian 5:20). Some are called to preach a message of hope to a large congregation. Others have been called to instruct a small group or encourage just one…but we all have been called!

We are never responsible for the outcome of a ministry, only for the obedience of faithfully delivering His message. God remains in complete control of all results: “My Word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11). As we walk in obedience, His purpose is accomplished – not ours.

We must never lose sight of the One who called us to serve. Our worth is in being a child of God, not in the praises we receive or in what we can accomplish. We must continue to be obedient messengers who proclaim the Good News, teach the truth, and encourage at every opportunity. And when we become discouraged, let’s check our focus and always remember…this is His message and His ministry.

3. Activating your Gifts

Learning and knowing what your gifts are and activating them are different things.

Spiritual Gifts are for serving others and building up the body of Christ. Therefore, activating Spiritual Gifts requires the ability to love others.

1 Corinthians 13:1-13

1If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Let’s be good stewards and use the gifts and abilities He has given us!

Angels and What we Know about Them

What are they?

Do they hang out on the clouds playing their harps? Do they have a purpose?

Are they fantasy? Do we turn into angles when we die?

Let’s Explore!

Over the many years that I have lived on this earth, I have found that people really don’t have a good understanding of what angels are or what they do. At one time, I was one of those people.

As a lifetime retailer, I have sold a lot of angel wing jewelry.  So many times, I’d hear the story behind the purchase of such items. Usually, the purchase is tied to the great loss of a loved one. They purchase angel wings because it reminds them that their loved one is looking after them from above.

Before I fully understood what angels were, I even bought into the idea that when we die, we became angels. There’s this saying “They earned their wings today”, that oftentimes left me thinking, we might turn into angels somehow!

I’ve heard people talk about their guardian angels and sometimes in such a way, that it seems like angels take on a nature of fantasy.

We always picture them as beautiful human forms with halos, feathery wings, all white and glowing. They float around in the air, sit on clouds, and play their harps.

But what are angels really, are they superior to us? Do we turn into angels when we die? How does this angel thing work?

Let’s look at what the Bible has to say about angels. I think that’s a good place to start, considering God created the angels.

Nehemiah 9:6 Talks about God creating the Angels and refers to them as hosts. “And the hosts of heaven worship you.” Paul speaks of the angels when he states in Colossians 1:16 “…created the visible and the invisible…” God created them as individuals and to be angels specifically and it is believed that they were created shortly after the beginning in Genesis.

Humans do not turn into angels when they die. We will be clothed with our own heavenly bodies (2 Cor 5:4-5) and although we do not know what they will look like, 1 John 3:2-3 says that our new bodies will be like Christ’s glorious body.

We know that angels do not exist the same way that humans do. They are spirits and can’t usually be seen unless God chooses to reveal them to us. (Hebrews 1:13-14, Luke 24:39, Numbers 22:31, 2 Kings 6:17, Luke 2:13, Matthew 28:5, Hebrews 13:2)

There are three types of angels in the Bible: Cherubim, Seraphim and living creatures around God’s throne. Cherubim are like guards, Seraphim, though only mentioned once in the Bible, sing, and continually worship God.

Michael is called the Archangel, which means to have authority over the other angels, and Michael is called one of the chief princes in Daniel 10:13 and appears to lead God’s angelic army in Revelations 12. Paul also tells us that the Lord returns from heaven with the archangel’s call, but we do not know if the archangel referred to is Michael, leaving us to think that there might be other archangels. (1 Thess. 4:16)

Gabriel is the only other angel named and he appears to be a messenger. (Daniel 8:16, 9:21, Luke 1:19, 26-27)

Angels are not omnipresent like God. They can only be at one place at a time.

We don’t know how many angels there are, but we know that there are a lot of them according to scriptures. (Revelation 5:11)

Scripture tells us in Psalms 91:11-12 “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Though there is some debate about this amongst theologians, we are not sure that each of us has his own guardian angel.

We know that angels do not marry and that they are very powerful.

During our earthly lives, we are lower than the angels, Hebrews 2:7, and 1 Corinthians 6:3 states, “Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!” In other words, when Jesus returns, we will be raised higher than them.

Psalm 8:5 points out that mankind is given honor and glory which are not offered to angels. Mankind has already been given power and honor beyond what angels are allowed.

There are many scriptures that tell us that angels carry out some of God’s plans and that they directly glorify God.

We are not to worship angels and the Bible gives us a warning not to do so. (Colossians 2:18, Revelation 19:10) We are not to pray to angels either. 1 Timothy 2:5 clearly states that there is only one mediator between God and man and that is Jesus.

For a long period of time in my life, I thought they were just fantasy, until I had a better understanding. If we really want to know about angels, there are a lot of scriptures about them, we just need to read.

I do believe that there are angels and that they are creatures created by our Heavenly Father to serve His purposes. I know that many times I have been protected by the hand of God, and He just might have sent His angels to help me. We will just say; I’ve had a few unexplained experiences!

But for God!
